Should You Worry About Sun Damage in Winter?

Sun damage isn’t usually a problem in the UK in winter. The UV rays are not usually strong enough at this time of year to cause sunburn, but they can still affect your skin. Sun damage is responsible for many of the skin conditions treated by dermatologists in London. Even the mild sun that your skin is exposed to at this time of year can contribute to the gradual damage that causes skin to age and develop problems such as sun spots and skin cancer. It is therefore important to continue protecting your skin from the sun in winter, especially if you have sensitive skin, you spend a lot of time outside, or you’re travelling overseas.

Protecting Your Skin in Winter

You should protect your skin in winter by using the same methods as you do in the summer. Shade your face and ears with a hat, cover up with long sleeves, and use sun cream on exposed areas when you are outside. Since the sun isn’t as strong in winter, you should be able to wear sunscreen with a lower SPF. Most people will benefit from wearing an SPF of at least 15 every day as it can prevent the long-term skin damage that is responsible for skin cancer and other disorders frequently seen by dermatologists in London. Proper sun protection can reduce the risk that your skin will be affected.

Travelling in Winter

You can check the UV index for the area you are travelling to on the weather forecast. It should tell you whether you will need to pack sunscreen for your trip. You will probably need to use sun protection if you are travelling to the southern hemisphere, as the seasons will be the opposite of the UK. You may also need to use sun cream if you are travelling closer to the equator. The sun will be stronger at your destination, even in winter. It will also be important to remember your sun protection if you are going to a ski resort or a snowy area. Snow reflects the UV rays that hit the ground, which means your skin can be damaged even in winter. The UV rays will also be stronger if you are at a high altitude, so make sure you wear sunglasses and use plenty of sunscreen and ask your dermatologist in London for advice if you have any questions about sun protection.
